vinyl collection

uite a modest beginning for a vinyl collection, but anyhow it is initiated. Would I be an audiophile? Definitely not, vinyl might sound warmer, more acoustic, even addictive to some, but they are certainly not of the best quality. Could I be an antique collector? Absolutely not, that’s a race of money in which I would surely be the loser. Or is it a hobby to prove oneself fashionable, à la mode? Equally nope, so what is special about vinyl? Let me remind you that values are in – tangible, they does not exist on the discs, on the turntable, they exist when you feel and understand the sound!

Btw, this is the 300th post on the blog, 300 in 6 years, on average one a week.

Above are some of my Vietnamese discs which date back to the 1965 ~ 1975 period (actually Vietnamese music are much harder to find compared to Western music). For the moment, Thái Thanh, Mai Hương, Kim Tước…’s discs are extremely rare, you can count with the fingers in your hand. Khánh Ly, Lệ Thu, Hà Thanh…’s records are easier, but still somewhat hard to find. Discs of Hoàng Oanh, Thanh Thúy… are still around, just spent time to find some. For others like Chế Linh, Tuấn Vũ, Hùng Cường, Mai Lệ Huyền… music of the masses, huge piles of them exist until today. That totally reflects the picture of a pyramid!

music of vietnam

ost here as documentation a recently collected vinyl disc: Music of Vietnam, by Phạm Duy, a 1965 Folkways Records’ compilation of fork music from many ethnical regions in Vietnam. Although the cover is quite ragged, the disc is almost untouched and still in a very good condition (see the second image, the first is from Folkways). I would try to digitalize and post some samples soon…

neo – analog

t has been in my mind for quite a long time, the coined term of neo analog, just like neo classical, neo colonial, neo nazi… Starting from Kindle, I love the idea of an e – book reader with e – ink display which mimics traditional reading material (no more developing on Kindle, gave it to my sister already). Then came the interesting concept of Livescribe, the smart pen that records your hand writing & drawing, then this latest “toy”, a vinyl disc player.

Trường ca Hội Trùng Dương
(Thái Thanh & hợp ca Thăng Long)

I’ve been making a small collection of Vietnamese oldies on vinyl discs, which are really hard to find at the moment. This is an entry – level turntable that can be connected to PC via USB cable. The sound can be captured into digital format as the analog device is being played. Images on the left: the turntable connected to PC, and recording with Audacity on my Ubuntu laptop. I’m digitalizing the lovely songs from the 2 discs brought back from my last trip to Dalat.

Every motivation that makes a man do something can be classified under: survival, social life and entertainment. Progress is defined as reaching a higher category: not doing a thing merely for survival, but for social reasons, and then, even better, just for fun. (Linus Torvalds’ law)

For the time being, I still can not refine the sound quality recorded via USB on this Ubuntu laptop, though the really aging discs still produce good sound with speakers 😢. Would post the music samples once they are done, the very early recordings of outstanding Vietnamese masterpieces!

Let listen to the beautiful music on the margin. What’s next on neo analog!? Something would be mentioned in one of my next blog post!

7554 – the điện biên phủ game

game to be published this October, to be precise, the first Vietnamese FPS (first person shooter) 3D game, and you know what it’s about, the famous Battle of Điện Biên Phủ. The game features 4 main characters, all joined the anti – colonial – French movements from the very early days, participated in various operations before arriving at the final confrontation at Điện Biên Phủ. Not yet to be released, but below are some nice preview screenshots. Having some experiences with game engines, I could say that PC 3D games nowadays are not that hard as before.

They are not really about low level graphics techniques, you would rarely even touch to OpenGL (or DirectX), the engines support most elements you would need. To make a game interesting, it is more about storyboard, scene building, animation, physical modeling and game AI. Anyhow, this is an interesting and promising project, since not only it’s the 1st real FPS game made in Vietnam, but also the first game that takes its inspirations and stories from our history!
